Greenwood is the main southside destination for buyers trading a shorter commute for more house. John B. and Isaac Smock, brothers by way of Kentucky, settled here on 30 September 1823, and so many neighbours shared their surname that the place was simply called Smocktown. It became Greenwood in 1832 to stop the confusion with Greenfield, and incorporated in 1864 with about three hundred residents.
