What Carmel homes are actually like

Carmel homes tend to be larger and newer than the city average — roughly seven in ten are detached single-family, with a median construction year around 1998. In practice that means more square footage per visit, more bathrooms, and often a finished basement that effectively adds a whole extra level. It also means newer surfaces: engineered floors, quartz counters, and glass shower enclosures that show water spots and need the right product rather than the strongest one.

Four settlers laid out the town on 13 April 1837 and called it Bethlehem; the original plat held just fourteen lots, on land the Delaware had lived on and Quaker families soon settled. Indiana already had a Bethlehem post office, so the name Carmel arrived with the post office in 1846 and was made official by a vote of 33 to 12 in 1874.
