Beech Grove is unusual: geographically surrounded by Indianapolis, it's an excluded city that runs its own police, fire, and public works departments. Its housing reflects its history — mostly compact, older homes, many built for railroad workers. The Big Four Railroad built its repair shops here in 1905, and the town incorporated the following November to serve them; the Beech Grove Improvement Company put up the houses the workers needed. The shops outlived the railroad that built them — Amtrak took them over in 1975 and they are still working today.
