Indianapolis isn't one cleaning market — it's a dozen. Chosen in 1820 for sitting almost exactly at the geographic centre of the state, Indianapolis was platted the following year by Alexander Ralston, who had helped Pierre L'Enfant lay out Washington, D.C. His Mile Square — a circle at the middle with four avenues cutting diagonally across a grid — is still the shape of downtown two centuries later.
